There are many types of abrasive tools and materials—such as sanding belts, sandpaper, grinding wheels, flap discs, grinding fluids, and polishing pastes—but today, let’s focus on the flap disc. Also known as an elastic grinding disc, the flap disc is a new type of highly elastic coated abrasive product. It features excellent elasticity and grinds without burning the workpiece; it is primarily used with angle grinders or other power tools. Flap discs are widely used for grinding weld seams and removing oil or rust from large surface areas in industries such as shipbuilding, bridge construction, automotive manufacturing, and aircraft production. They are also used for the finishing and polishing of molds, dies, and electroplated parts. To ensure grinding fluid performs effectively during the grinding process, the method of fluid delivery is a critical factor that cannot be overlooked.
When using the pouring method to supply grinding fluid, the fluid often struggles to penetrate the grinding zone. The main reasons for this are as follows:
1. Air within the pores of the grinding wheel face: Due to centrifugal force, air flows from the center toward the wheel's periphery; the larger the pores and the higher the rotational speed, the greater this effect becomes.
2. The influence of the grinding wheel guard: Compared to operating without a guard, the dynamic pressure of the airflow increases by approximately 50% when a guard is used.
3. Rotational airflow: As the grinding wheel spins, it generates a rotating airflow around its periphery; the higher the wheel speed, the greater the impact of this airflow.
Flap discs are constructed by bonding abrasive cloth flaps to a plastic or fiber mesh backing plate and are designed for use with angle grinders. They typically come in varieties with 36, 56, 72, or 80 flaps.
Grit sizes generally range from 40# to 320#.
Materials include brown fused alumina, zirconia alumina, silicon carbide, and others.
Flap discs are suitable for a wide range of applications—including rust, paint, and burr removal, as well as weld seam grinding—on various metal and non-metal surfaces across industries such as shipbuilding, automotive, aerospace, machinery, instrumentation, bridge construction, architecture, and furniture manufacturing.
